Victims of child abuse now fear being branded liars

Letters to the Editor: Victims of child abuse now fear being branded liars

There has been rightful condemnation of Carl Beech’s false accusations of childhood sexual abuse (“Police knew I was innocent, says smeared war hero”, News, last week).
False accusations are very rare, however, compared with the many thousands of people who were sexually abused in childhood and as adults are struggling to cope.
This is a hidden epidemic in our midst. These genuine survivors are hurting. Those who use my organisation’s telephone support line say that they now do not want to disclose their childhood abuse to the police for fear of being disbelieved. They are scared of seeking support in case they are branded liars.
