Man is arrested after ‘mistaking newborn baby for a doll and punching her’ in a supermarket

A man is under arrest after allegedly punching a baby in a supermarket, police have said.

Elsie Rose, who was just five days old, went on her first outing to
Tesco in Baguley near Manchester with her parents, Amy Duckers and Lewis
Temple. Her seven-year-old sister, Libby, was also with the family when
they saw some friends and neighbours and introduced them to the new
arrival.

One of the group of neighbours saw a work colleague who was with her
husband. It is alleged the man came over and punched the baby, leaving a
“very big fist mark” on her forehead, according to Ms Duckers.

Elsie’s parents immediately called security, who then called the
police as the suspect apologised and said he thought the baby was a
doll. The 63-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault.

Thankfully, Elsie, weighing 6lb 12oz, is not believed to have been
seriously injured, but was taken to hospital and monitored overnight as a
precaution.

Ms Duckers posted details of the traumatic experience on Facebook,
praising staff at Tesco for the way they handled the situation.

She wrote: “Thank you so much to Baguley Tesco for all you did
tonight (Monday) you were all amazing thank you so much for the way you
dealt with the situation and treated us all.”
