UPDATE | Waynesboro man accused of murder in death of 6-month-old

BURKE COUNTY, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) — A Burke County man has been charged in the death of a 6-month-old at a home on Hummingbird Lane near Waynesboro.

According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Burke
County Sheriff’s Office received a call about 3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug.
27 about an unresponsive baby in Richmond County.

The 911 caller, William Roger Hillis II, 21, met
both Burke and Richmond County deputies and EMS on Old Waynesboro Road
in Richmond County. Gold Cross EMS then transported the baby to the
Children’s Hospital of Georgia.

A spokesperson with the GBI said Burke County
Sheriff’s Office asked for their assistance in the investigation. The
joint investigation revealed the 6-month-old was in the care of Hillis
when the baby “suffered significant injuries.”

On Saturday, Hillis was arrested and charged with murder. Hillis was original facing a child cruelty charge.

Investigators said the child had head and body
trauma and his injuries weren’t consistent with the story Hillis gave
about the baby falling, according to the Burke County Sheriff’s Office.

“We interviewed Mr. Hillis here at the Sheriff’s
Office, and he stated that while caring for the child at his residence
on Hummingbird Lane – the child had sustained a fall,” said Investigator
Dan Lowe, “We know that the child didn’t injure itself.”

On Monday, August 29, the baby died at the
Children’s Hospital of Georgia. Investigators tell us that the body will
be transported to the GBI Crime Lab near Atlanta where an autopsy will
be performed.

According to investigators, Hillis is now facing murder charges. He is currently being held at the Burke County Jail.
