A care home worker was jailed after admitting sneaking into the room of an elderly resident with dementia in order to fondle her breasts.
Derek Rigby, 44, repeatedly took advantage of the woman, who was in her eighties and had suffered a series of mini strokes.
But he was caught when her suspicious daughter placed a hidden “nanny cam” in the room at Colliers Court, in Haydock, and caught him in the act.
Michael Stephenson, prosecuting, told Liverpool Crown Court how Rigby admitted four counts of engaging in sexual activity with a person with a mental disorder between December 2013 and June this year, including one specific incident which was recorded and shown to the judge.
He said suspicions were raised when the victim told her daughter that a male member of staff was undressing her at night and coming into her room for a “kiss and a cuddle”.
When Rigby, a dad-of-two, came in to give her some medicine she identified him as the culprit.
Once the hidden camera was in place it wasn’t long before it caught Rigby.
The court heard that the victim had a severe change in her personality following a series of strokes and she had become “disinhibited”.
Rigby, of Hawkley Hill, Wigan, had noticed this and even reported it to staff but despite this began his campaign of abuse.
Joseph Kotrie-Monson, defending, said Rigby was suffering from stress and exhaustion at the time and otherwise had an excellent and unblemished record from his six years working in the care industry.
He added that his life was “in tatters” but his friends and wife were standing by him.
Judge Andrew Menary, QC, said: “Anyone who sees your actions on that night will be shocked and horrified at the gross breach of trust by you toward this vulnerable person.
“People, who have relatives in care are entitled to expect that their loved ones will be looked after and cared for appropriately and not subject to systematic sexual abuse at the hands of someone in a senior position.”
He jailed Rigby for 30 months, ordered him to sign on the sex offenders register for life and banned him from working with vulnerable adults and children
