Inmate’s Death Sparks Investigation at Prison
AN investigation is due to be launched after the ‘sudden’ death of a prisoner at HMP Styal.
The Ministry of Justice has confirmed the 41-year-old inmate died while in custody at the women’s prison.
She has been identified as Nicola Birchall.
Police were called to the jail on Sunday morning after Ms Birchall’s body was discovered.
The death is not being treated as suspicious, Cheshire Police have confirmed, and an inquest is expected to be held at a later date.
An independent investigation by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman (PPO) is set to be launched to establish the full circumstances surrounding Ms Birchall’s death.
The PPO carries out independent investigations into all deaths and complaints in custody.
In a statement, a Prison Service spokesperson said: “HMP Styal prisoner Nicola Birchall, 41, died in custody on Sunday, February 4, 2018. “As with all deaths in custody, there will be an independent investigation by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman.”
No further details about the incident – or Ms Birchall – have been revealed by the Prison Service.
It is not know whether she was serving a sentence or on remand. …
