The disgraced entertainer was targeted by a fellow lag as he strolled through HMP Bullingdon, Oxfordshire.
Paedophile Harris, 84, had been subjected to cries of “nonce” as he passed by a group of prisoners, before one stood up and spat in his direction.
A source said: “There was one prisoner who looks like he wanted to make a name for himself and tried to spit at him.
“It didn’t hit, but it got close.
“Then all of a sudden another guy came steaming in and a fight started.”
Harris was not involved in the fighting but the source added: “You could see Rolf was shocked by what happened.”
News of the brawl broke after it was revealed Harris’s lawyers had applied to appeal his 12 convictions for indecent assaults on girls as young as seven.
He was jailed for five years and nine months but will be free in less than three years.
Prosecutors this week opted not to appeal the sentence as being too lenient, although Scotland Yard confirmed it is probing fresh allegations against him.
One victim said: “It’s beyond belief for Harris to appeal and feels such an insult.
“Perhaps I should have expected it but it’s still a shock.”
