A

daughter’s dead body in the refrigerator for six months has been
sentenced to 40 years in prison.
Amber
Keyes, 37, was sentenced on Friday in the death of her daughter Ayahna
Comb, who weighed just 14 pounds when she was discovered in June 2014.
Ayahna,
who had cerebral palsy, had been wrapped in blankets and stuffed in the
crisper drawer of the refrigerator, which Keyes would use to store food
for next six months.

daughter Ayahna Comb (right), who weighed just 14 pounds when she was
found stuffed in a fridge in 2014
Her official cause of death was ruled to be malnutrition and dehydration, according to KHOU
Keyes’
daughter was also covered in ulcers that are caused by immobility, and
they had developed into an extremely rare infection in her bone known
as osteomyelitis
Ayahna was discovered
by a concerned neighbor, who walked into Keyes’ Houston home through an
unlocked door after they hadn’t seen the little girl for months.
Keyes later told investigators that her daughter stopped breathing around 3am on January 29, 2014.
The
mother-of-three said she tried to revive her daughter with CPR, but
when it failed to work she ‘panicked’ and put her inside the fridge
instead of calling 911.
Keyes admitted
she had not taken her Ayahna, who was confined to a wheelchair and had
to be bottle-fed, to a doctor for two years.
She also said her daughter had recently refused to eat.

Keyes was charged with injury to a child in October 2014. She pleaded guilty in December to injury to a child by omission.

The
sentencing comes more than a decade after Keyes lost custody of her
eldest child, who Child Protective Services said was being abused by a
man she was dating.
Just 18-months-old at the time, the infant girl was placed in foster care.
Keyes
went on to have Ayahna and her now seven-year-old sister with Armand
Comb – who was not living with the family at the times of her arrest.
After
Keyes was taken into custody her youngest child was placed with a
relative of Comb, who has been charged several times with drug
possession.
Comb
told reporters after Keyes was arrested that he spoke to his
ex-girlfriend on the day his daughter was discovered, and that she
talked ‘like Ayahna was there with them’.
‘I just want to know what happened man, why?’ he said.
‘I was right here I would’ve helped. I would’ve done anything.’
