A 10-YEAR-OLD boy was charged by police with rape – one of 36 North-east children reported for serious sex offences.

The boy allegedly assaulted a 13-year-old boy. Seven other reports of rape by children aged 13 or under were recorded by police in the former Grampian force area in 2012.
All the cases were passed to the Children’s Reporter or Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal.
A five-year-old was also caught in possession of a knife by police – one of 37 youngsters found with an offensive weapon in 2012.
However, overall there has been a dramatic reduction in youth offending. Between 2006/7 and 2012/13 the number of offenders in the North-east aged eight to 16 fell from 2,626 to 1,194 – a 55% drop.
