A female backpacker has described the moment she fell off a cliff and broke her back while fleeing a sex attack.
Hannah
Gavios, 23, a lone tourist, had only been in Krabi, Thailand, for two
days when she asked at a tourist shop for instructions after becoming
lost.
A worker offered to show her the way, but instead led her into a jungle where they began climbing a mountain.
Miss
Gavios then fell 150ft down a cliff after fighting off the man, who
tried pinning her against the ground and ripping her clothes off.
The traveller fractured her spine and smashed her head on the way down before laying crippled on the floor.
However, her ordeal continued when her attacker, Apai Ruengvorn, 28, scrambled after her and began molesting her.
A few hours later, Ruengvorn returned to the scene with co-workers and an ambulance crew who rescued Miss Gavios.
Miss
Gavios described how she managed to punch Ruengvorn several times and
bite off part of his ear when she was initially attacked.

She said: “I started walking back to where I came from. Once there was distance between us I started running.
“It was pitch black and before I knew it I was in mid air falling off a cliff. I was honestly thinking I wouldn’t survive.
“I hit my head a few times and landed with a big bump. I was screaming in pain. It was the most painful thing ever.
“I felt like a total vegetable. I felt completely vulnerable. I couldn’t move anything.”
Miss Gavios, who teaches in Vietnam, was taken to hospital, where her parents flew to her from New York.
The 23-year-old is adamant she wants to return to her job teaching in south-east Asia.
“I’m
taking one day at a time. But I’m really glad my legs aren’t broken. I
want to stay in Asia and return to teaching in Vietnam”, she said.
Lt
Songpol Bunchai, from the local police, confirmed Miss Gavios’s story
and added: ”The suspect admitted that he became aroused and tried to
molest the woman”.
Ruengvorn faces years in prison.
