A “dangerous”
70-year-old Colchester paedophile who sexually abused young boys over a
period of four decades has been jailed for 19 years.

The predatory actions of Ronald Smith, of Winchester Road, have
left his now adult victims feeling depressed, confused and guilty,
Ipswich Crown Court heard yesterday when Smith was sentenced following a
17-day trial.
He was convicted by a jury of committing sex acts
on young boys. The offences, which relate to eight victims, took place
between 1972 and 2014. Some of the boys were under the age of 10 when
the offences took place.
He assaulted boys in beds, a car and at a sports club. The court heard Smith groomed his victims.
One emotional victim who addressed the court yesterday said he suffered from depression and sleepless nights.
He
said: “I am often regarded as the life and soul of the party. However,
nothing could be further from the truth. My actions around those closest
to me are a cover up (for my) insecurities.
“I have lost
confidence in myself. I have always been held back in life. I have had
lots of suicidal thoughts but never believed I would carry them out – I
just wanted attention. I wanted someone to help me.
“To this day, I
still visualise the crime which took place. It leaves me feeling low
and depressed and anxious about life in general.”
The victim
looked at Smith on his way back to the public gallery. Smith, wearing a
black and white striped shirt and light blue jeans, had his arms folded
and stared forward.
Prosecutor Brett Weaver read out other victim
statements to the court. One child was too scared to have a Christmas
stocking on their bed due to fears of a stranger entering their bedroom.
Others suffered relationship and workplace breakdowns.
Smith was
found guilty of eight offences of indecent assault on a male and guilty
of a further two offences of indecent assault on a male person.
He was also found guilty of buggery and one offence of sexual assault on a child under 13.
Smith also has a previous conviction for a sexual offence involving a 13-year-old boy dating back to 1973.
He was found not guilty of three offences of indecent assault on a male and one charge of sexual assault on a child under 13.
He
was sentenced to 19 years in prison. Judge Martyn Levett said that
Smith is a “danger” to children and posed a “significant risk” to the
public.
Describing the case as “disturbing”, he said: “The lives
of the victims have been ruined. Some have self-harmed because they are
embarrassed about their bodies, struggled with employment, feel angry,
and some have (turned to) alcohol and drugs to numb their memories.”
He said Smith had been arrested in 1994, 2000 and 2011 over similar charges but “lied his way out of being exposed”.
