1-Yr-Old Baby Dies From Meth Overdose With 43 Injuries To His Body; Mom Charged

Lina Marie Daley, the mother of 13-month old Makavelii Leoni, was charged with manslaughter, torture, and drug trafficking.

A 13-month-old infant, found with over 40 injuries to his body, has died from an alleged meth overdose in a reputed drug den in Queensland, Australia. The incident first came to light on September 24 last year, when Makavelii Leoni passed away in a hospital after his breathing stopped at his residence at Cairns, Queensland.
The Courier Mail reported that the Cairns Magistrates Court declared that the baby boy had 43 separate physical injuries on him.

It’s gut wrenching to imagine how much suffering this poor little soul endured. I wish they’d throw away the key with his monster of a mother . But of course they won’t , it wasn’t her fault , it was the meth !

Investigators who took up the case found that the infant had bite marks, burns, bruises, and grazes among other body injuries. The prosecutor who addressed the court was Senior Sergeant Maynard Marcum who recounted “four days before his death, he was seen happy, laughing, in a good condition. Four days later, the baby was dead.”

Earlier this month, Makavelii’s 21-year-old mother Lina Marie Daley was arrested and charted with attempted manslaughter, torture, and drug trafficking. Several witnesses claimed to have seen Daley smoking ice whilst simultaneously breastfeeding little Makavelii. Daley is a reported drug offender who has allegedly trafficked methamphetamine and cannabis.

The court declared that the baby suffered “prolonged” and “systematic exposure” to meth and that he was exposed to the toxic substance through his mother’s breast milk.
It wasn’t known as to how much meth exactly the child involuntarily consumed, but Makavelii was found to have at least 0.7mg/kg of the substance in his system.
That quantity is even fatal to an adult, as per the toxicity report that was shown in court. The police and investigators acknowledged that the infant may have even swallowed a chunk of Daley’s meth from her personal stash. Sergeant Maynard Marcum went on to say that. “The precise time and method of exposure are not clear, but it was sufficient to be fatal,”.

Police also claimed that they found an ice pipe and some cannabis inside Makavelii’s nappy bag. The court declaration confirmed the same and revealed that Daley reportedly sold a “halfball” of ice to a stranger for $550.
Daley appeared in court via video link on Monday from the Townsville Women’s Correctional Center. Her defense barrister allegedly argued that the prosecution’s case was “wanting” and purely “circumstantial” as he applied for her bail.
He said that there was a large group of other adults at the home at the same time, so it was not possible to ascertain that Makavelii was poisoned after being exposed to his mother’s drugs.

Sgt. Marcum, meanwhile, said that regardless of the defense barrister’s plea, there has clearly been an “egregious breach of duty of care” by the mother. He went on to explain how Daley had failed to safeguard her baby boy from being systematically and fatally exposed to drugs, and violence.
Such actions and the resulting death of her baby are sure to work against her favor in court. Needless to say, Daley was denied bail and is still in police custody. Her forthcoming appearance at the Cairns Magistrates Court is scheduled on December 4th.
