Mystery as schoolboy, 14, is found unconscious and fighting for life on the hard shoulder of a motorway during rush hour

A child is fighting for his life in hospital after being found unconscious on the hard shoulder of the M67 earlier this evening.

The motorway has been shut after the schoolboy, 14, was discovered in a critical condition on the eastbound stretch of road at 5.25pm.

He was taken to hospital, where he is still fighting for his life, Greater Manchester Police said.

It is unclear at this stage whether the boy was hit by a car, and police are keeping an open mind about what may have happened to him.

It could be that the boy fell from a bridge or a moving vehicle.

The road remains shut between junction 1 for Ashton-Under-Lyne and junction 3 for Hyde, Manchester.

The incident has led to major traffic queues in the area and motorists are being urged to take alternative routes.
