Another witness said she’d been put on the contraceptive pill and then raped by the deputy manager, Alan Gilbert, who has since died.
The Inquiry resumes tomorrow morning.

A witness at Jersey’s Independent Care Inquiry has today described how one member of staff in charge of Haute de la Garenne was sadistic, dishonest and a fluent liar.
Witness 126 said Colin Tillbrook, who was in charge in the 1960s, would take pleasure in caning young boys and when abuse from another staff member was mentioned he said he didn’t believe it.
Those alleged attacks, which were committed by another witness, number 491, involved beating young boys, throwing things like snookers balls and ash trays at them and also whipping them with a wet towel when in the showers, which left red welts on the boys’ skin.

The treatment was cruel and barbaric. The experience of this place is always there and you try to put it to the back of your mind and get on with life, and I feel there was never anyone there to give me help.

Jersey’s Independent Care Inquiry heard more harrowing evidence from witnesses today.
Statements from a man, known as Witness 195 were read out – describing the three and a half years when he says he was repeatedly raped by a man who visited him at Haut de la Garenne.
The witness spent eight years at the home in the early 1960s. After around three or four weeks of being there, staff told him a man known as Witness 264 was going to take him out for the day.
On the third trip out, instead of going for ice cream as on previous occasions, Witness 264 allegedly drove the young boy down a secluded lane and forced him to preform oral sex.

I just couldn’t understand what he’d done to me and why. I didn’t know if it was right or wrong.

– Witness 195
Fearing further assaults, Witness 195 said he would make up excuses whenever Witness 264 came to take him out, but he still ended up having to go.
He said, on a number of occasions the man took him out on a boat where he would go on to commit violent rape.

I was afraid to tell anyone. I felt like a piece of meat, unclean and dirty.

– Witness 195
In the statement, Witness 195 told of how he was abused in a couple of hotels in the island. He questioned why no one stopped what was happening, as at least one adult saw him being led up to a bedroom by a grown man.
He blamed the system for putting him in the home and for allegedly allowing Witness 264 to do this to him.
He said he suffered “so much pain, I will never forget until the day I die” and added: “This should never have happened to me or any other kids.”
The inquiry continues tomorrow.
